Snow and Ice Safety Tips

DO

  • Allow extra time in the morning to get to your bus stop on time.
  • Wear bright clothing so you can be seen in the early morning or late afternoon.
  • Wear raincoats in colors other than yellow so you won't blend with the yellow school bus
  • Dress properly. Warm clothes, hats, mittens and boots will keep you from getting sick.
  • Remember your book bags and books.
  • Ask someone to drive you to school if you have a science project or an object which will prevent you from seeing or concentrating on safety.
  • Look carefully before crossing the street. Check both ways for traffic coming.
  • Stand away from where the bus stops. Remember buses need extra room to stop when there is snow or ice on the roads.
  • Stand far back from the bus stop.
  • Walk directly away from the bus. Don't linger or play at the bus stop.
  • Keep all pets in the house before school.
  • Keep a safe distance from the bus. A safe distance means not being able to touch the bus.

DON'T

  • Play in the snow while waiting for the school bus.
  • Throw snowballs at the bus or anyone else.
  • Slide on the snow-banks, you could slide under the wheel of a school bus.
  • Slide on ice patches in driveways or the street.
  • Stoop down to pick up papers. Make sure you can be seen by the bus driver.
  • Push or shove around the bus stop. Someone could slide or fall under the wheels.
